Women always played an important role in the aviation industry as air hostesses, customer service agents and even pilots. Many female pilots have achieved remarkable feats in their life. Today, in this blog I am going to focus on the remarkable achievements of women in the aviation industry who gained a strong foothold in the aviation industry despite facing inequality and prejudices.

Blanche Scott was not only the first female driver, who drove across the U.S but also the first woman to fly a plane in America. Her instructor Glenn Curtis was reluctant to give her flying lessons and wanted her to learn to maneuver the plane on the ground so he inserted a block of wood beneath the aircraft’s throttle paddle, but just like a bolt from the blue, the blocks dislodged and Scott went up on a short flight trip proving that women are equally capable of flying an aircraft. She flew her first official flight in 1910 and was popularly known as the “ Tomboy of The Air”.

Harriet Quimby was the first woman to fly a plane across the English Channel in 1912, She was an American writer who wanted to soar high in the sky after covering aviation-related stories. She was keen on documenting her flight experiences.  The magazine company for which she used to write, paid for her flight lessons. In 1911, she became the first us woman to receive a pilot certificate, issued to her by the Aero Club of  America. Amelia Earhart was the female pilot to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. She was also one of the first aviators to promote commercial air travel and was instrumental in establishing “ Ninety Nine”, an organization for female pilots. She was also an author and wrote best–selling books about her flying experiences. Bessie Coleman was the first Native American Woman Pilot in 1922. As a woman and also an African – American the aviation programs denied her but she fought against all odds and emerged victorious.

Sarla Thukral was the first among Indian women to fly an aircraft. She earned an aviation pilot license in 1936 at the age of 21. She even completed one thousand hours of flying in an aircraft owned by the Lahore Flying Club. The first female pilot of independent India was Usha Sundaram 

During World War 2 the U.S trained women to fly military planes due to a shortage of pilots. This group of pilots was known as Women Air force Service Pilots(WASP) who played an important role on behalf of the US in World War 2. But in 1944, the WASP was disbanded due to increased availability of male pilots, despite their immense contribution.

In 2021, Zoya Agarwal, an Air India pilot created a landmark in the history of Indian aviation as the captain of the inaugural flight from San Francisco to Bengaluru, one of the longest non-stop air routes in the world what was amazing is that the flight was an all-woman crew . This remarkable feat proved that women have the power to fly high in the sky with success.

Many women also reach the zenith of success in the aviation industry by becoming air hostesses. Ellen Church became the world’s first stewardess. Neerja Bhanot of India who was a head purser of Pan Am Flight 73 which was hijacked by terrorists during a stopover in Karachi, Pakistan bravely accepted death while saving passengers in1986 at a tender age of 23.
