How many new airports are coming up In India

The Indian Aviation Industry has experienced unprecedented growth in the last few years. The central government has implemented many schemes to help the Indian Aviation Industry, which contributes significantly to the Indian economy moving towards the path of progress.

“Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagarik” or the UDAN scheme is a regional airport development program of the Government of India launched on 21st October 2016. Its main aim is to make air travel affordable for the citizens of India and boost the economic growth of the country.

The Scheme has two main parts. The first part is to develop new airports and enhance the existing regional airports to increase the number of operational airports for civilian flights from 70 to 150 and the second part is to add several hundred financially viable, capped airfare, new regional flight routes to connect more than 100 unserved airports in smaller towns with each other and with the airports of the bigger cities using Viability Gap Funding( VGF) where needed.

Under the UDAN scheme, the number of aircraft jumped from 395( 2014) to 548 ( 2017). The scheme adds 50 aircraft every year to the existing one.

Recently in March 2022, Civil Aviation Minister Jyotirao Scindia highlighted the major role that the aviation industry plays in the Indian economy and underlined the fact that the government of India has set a target of creating 220 new airports by 2025 and stated that the strength of cargo flights for perishable food items will be increased to 30 % with 133 new flights and 33 new domestic cargo terminals. He also added that 16 new airports will be built in 5 states of Central India which includes Madhya Pradesh, Chattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Maharashtra, and stressed the fact that the total number of airports in the country has also increased after the implementation of the UDAN Scheme. India had 74 airports in 2014  but in the past 7 years, 66 new airports have been added.
